OBLONG VOIDSPACE

2003

Jene Highstein & Steven Holl

Jene Highstein:

"A large-scale work realized in ice conveys an almost mystical experience. The translucence and fleeting quality of three foot thick blocks of ice makes for a uniquely immediate experience."

Steven Holl:

"Oblong Voidspace" is a collaboration between the sculptor Jene Highstein and the architect Steven Holl. Conceived as an interior experience of space and light, the nine meter tall cube of ice contains a space modeled as an absent figure of a huge monolithic shape characteristic of Jene Highstein's sculpture. Sited on the river edge of the city of Rovaniemi, the melt-down of the ice is calculated to create a hole which appears giving a first view to the city of Rovaniemi around l March 21st.
