BLUE NIGHT

2021

Kiki Smith

Kiki Smith’s site-inspired installation, Blue Night, consists of over forty-two animalconstellations that will fill the 40 foot wide x 192 foot long center section of Giralda Plaza. The site under a canopy of palm fronds, inspired Kiki to create an artwork in which peoplelooked up as well learn about her interest with 17th century constellation drawings. This gesture allows visitors to see art in a fresh way versus a museum approach.  Kiki has long been fascinated with the heavens, human relationship to nature, and constellations.  This opportunity allowed her to further her explorations.

In recognizing that downtown Coral Gables is surrounded by nature, Kiki wants to bring animals into town through her constellations. Her work often comments on environmental stewardship and one’s relationship with nature. She hopes that viewers will begin to see themselves differently as well as their town by transforming Giralda Plaza into an art installation. Each animal constellation are made from transparent blue plexiglass sheetswith mirrored drawings bonded to the surface. These figures will highlight the stars comprising the actual constellations on both sides of the artwork with holographic vinyl.

Throughout the day & night, this artwork will embrace technology through an AugmentedReality feature. When gazing at Kiki’s constellation inspired artwork, each animal will trigger afeature that highlights the stars and asterism - constellation pattern. As Kiki calls this plane, “thespace between heaven and earth.” A free downloadable coloring book for children will be developed and individual print outs will be provided so children can learn about constellations and astronomy. This artwork encourages all to dream, fantasize, and hope for a good future.

This installation was funded by the City of Coral Gables.
