WE TELL THEM THEY CAN FLY
2026
Steve Davis
Our culture is a game in which the deck is stacked and the rules are skewed. We give our kids wings and tell them they are angels and that they can fly. But here is the catch: only an elite few are given actual wings. All others are given costume feathers and led to believe that the inevitable failure to fly is their fault rather than that of a rigged system.

Many of us who are presented with these inadequate tools are convinced that they will actually work. And who knows, perhaps they once would have in a less gilded age. However, in this time where billionaires receive tax breaks and fly to space and the government claims it can't support education and healthcare, the American Dream and all it ensures is only possible with functional equipment. With make-believe wings and hollow promises of mythical possibilities, we send our kids to jump, one by one, into a free fall through the unattainable.
